Queen Anne’s Favorite Watering Hole
Where it all began…
Targy’s Tavern first opened its doors shortly after the conclusion of Prohibition. Slightly off the beaten path in the community of Upper Queen Anne, it maintains one of the most storied histories a neighborhood establishment can have.
Founded in 1937, Targy’s Tavern was named for a longshoremen who worked on Seattle’s docks -Targelson, fondly known to his cronies as “Targy”. The bar boasted an open concept with a U-shaped bar top that is still in place today.
The history in between…
After over 40 years of ownership, Fran and Ed passed the torch in the 1980’s to Seattle bar legend Charlie Files who famously owned the Sloop Tavern and Lenny’s.
The building was built in 1902 out of timber exclusively cut and milled from Queen Anne hill. Originally, it was used as sleeping quarters for workers manning the horse-drawn counterbalance trolleys.
How it’s going…
Over a century later, Seattle’s most historic neighborhood is thriving more than ever and Targy’s Tavern remains an iconic fixture. In the Spring of 2018, a new chapter began when Targy’s joined the Stedman Group.
